Description

Folios 412-414: James Bowen, HMS Argo, Dover Roads. Reports anchoring here at high water with 25 sail of Merchant Ships from Lisbon and Oporto bound for London. The next tide he hopes they will get around the Foreland and he will then proceed to Spithead for repairs. As per the orders of Captain Reynolds [Robert Carthew Reynolds] he transmits an account his proceedings since parting company with him on the 26 February 1800. He separated from HMS Pomone by signal with the following vessels:- James & John, Vine, Two Friends, Duke of Clarence and Terpsichore bound to Oporto with orders from Captain [Robert Carthew] Reynolds to see them safe over the bar, after which he was to make enquiry for and take under convoy all the ships ready to go to England. [Total 3 sides with details of the convoy etc]. [Mentions:- a list from the Consul with 32 sail for convoy, HMS Arethusa, Captain [Thomas] Wolley]. States he never received a list of all the ships directed to follow him. Reports on the 1 March 1800, near the bar of Oporto we captured the El Independente Spanish Lugger Privateer of 4 Guns and 36 Men and the next day captured another named San Antonio of the same force he took the prisoners out and scuttled her as the weather was bad. On the 24 March 1800 retook the Jane, Falmouth Packet, off Vigo, she had been taken the week before by the French Cutter La Vengeance. Later brought too the L'Arlequin French Privateer, 2 Guns and 34 Men, three days from Brest had not taken any thing.
