Folio 350: John Buchanan, HMS Roebuck, the Downs. In response to the order for John Armstrong to be discharged the latter took this with great reluctance and said he had written to his parents for their permission to remain. Armstrong is well educated and a Schoolmaster, he has helped the other young men and is a credit to any quarterdeck. He asks that Armstrong remains since they greatly need polite Officers.
Folio 351: enclosure with folios 350. Letter dated 20 September 1799 by John Buchanan, HMS Roebuck, Sheerness, to the Admiralty. He has received the order from Vice Admiral Graeme to discharge John M. Armstrong, said to be an apprentice. The order was not immediately carried out as he had an indenture indicating a protection to Vice Admiral Lutwidge. The latter saw that the name and date had been erased. Armstrong entered from HMS Texel as a volunteer for the Roebuck.
Folio 352: enclosure with folio 350. No date. To the Admiralty. John Buchanan, HMS Roebuck. The surname Armstrong appears to be omitted from the protection but added later. The entry from the certificate is John Manners Armstrong.
