Folios 274-276: Sir Thomas Byard, HMS Bedford, Hamoaze. Reports that he has, as directed in their letter of 28 April 1797, told Benjamin Berner that he has no objection to his appointment to HMS Hindostan as desired by Captain Mulock [Joshua Mulock]and that a man has been promised in lieu. Expresses concern, however, that as the crew of HMS Bedford are employed fitting different ships, by order of Admiral Sir Richard King, that he has received frequent requests from various Commanders to discharge men on the promise of promotion which if he had not resisted, the best men of HMS Bedford would soon have been accommodated on other ships.
