Description

Folios 232-236: William Butterfield, l'Hercule [Prize ship], Hamoaze. Encloses a duplicate letter sent to Lord Bridport.

Folios 233-235: enclosure with folios 232-236: Duplicate letter, dated 30 April 1798, from Lieutenant William Butterfield, l'Hercule [Prize ship], Hamoaze to Lord Bridport. Outlines the circumstances attending the capture of l'Hercule by HMS Mars and advises that he wrote to the Admiralty on 27 April to report that he has arrived in the Prize. Mentions Mr Welch, Boatswain and the loss of Captain Hood [Alexander Hood] and Captain White [Joseph White], Royal Marines, and encloses a list of killed and wounded and regrets that he was not more pointed in mentioning the good conduct of Lieutenant Bowker [John Bowker], Lieutenant Bowden, Lieutenant Epworth, Marines and Midshipmen Dennison, Cudd and Sherwood, and Thomas Allen, Acting Schoolmaster in HMS Mars who helped as a master to conduct the Prize into port. Commends Marine Officers Epworth, Hawkins and Taite and the gallant Captain Alexander Hood. Adds as a post script that l'Hercule lost upwards of 100 men and 250 wounded.

List of Seamen killed: Captain 1; Midshipman 1; Seamen 1. Died of wounds 4.

Wounded: Lieutenant Argles [George Argles] 1; Lieutenant Ford [George Arnold Ford]; Mr Southey [Thomas Southey] , Midshipman; Seamen 36; Boys 2.

Marines Killed: Captain White [Joseph White] 1; Corporal James Waters 1; Privates 2. Died of wounds 2.

Marines wounded: 19. 8 men reported missing were found on the Prize.
