Folios 226-227: Henry Samuel Butt, HMS Explosion, Grouville Bay, Jersey. Describes coming across in the bay a hired vessel belonging to HMS Joseph on which a Warrant Officer and a man in plain clothes were standing at the stern. When challenged the man not wearing a uniform explained he was the Lieutenant of HMS Joseph but that he was not on duty. Explains that he asked the officer to go on board HMS Explosion and asked him again for a reason for not wearing his uniform and was given the same explanation, Feels that the officer is acting in direct opposition to the Admiralty Order with respect to Officers always appearing in uniform in or near to a sea port as well as the disrespect shown to his superior and total subversion of all discipline. Hopes that there is not a similar occurrence.
Folios 228-229: enclosure with folios 226-227. Letter dated 4 June 1798, from Henry Samuel Butt, HMS Explosion, Grouville Bay, Jersey to Captain Philippe d'Auvergne, HMS Prince of Bouillon. Acknowledges receipt of his letter enclosing one from Lieutenant Hill of HMS Joseph in which Hill states that he has been treated in an 'unofficer' like manner by Henry Butt [letter not enclosed]. Asks whether his letter of 3 June 1798 regarding the conduct of Lieutenant Hill can be forwarded to their Lordships, along with his letter of 4 June 1798 asking for an enquiry into Hill's conduct and a possible Court Martial on the charges of disobedience of orders and disrespect.
