Description

Folios 28-30: James Bishop, HMS Janus, the Downs. Has arrived here with the transports and trade from Jamaica and St Domingo. Captain John Cook, of HMS Quebec, left the convoy at Cape Clear, Ireland to accompany the ships to their Ports and return to Spithead and is enclosing a copy of the order. He sailed from St Antonio with the convoy which arrived from Cape Nichola Mole on 4th August. He was passed by HMS Thames with merchantmen, in convoy, which arrived at the Mole. He gives a report on the voyage including reference to damage caused to his ship by the Musgrave tranpsort brigantine and subsequent events involving the Diana of Liverpool, the Isabella of Glasgow, West Indiaman, the Fides and James transports, meeting HMS Dorcas and HMS Dryad and Lord Ranelagh who provided protection for the convoy and support from HMS Phoebe, under Captain Barlow and HMS Melampus, under Captain Moore, the mortality amongst the crew, including Lieutenants Guy Murray and Alexander Brown, due to fever brought on board by the invalides, with reference to HMS York, and commends the work of Douglas White, Surgeon, who was a passenger returning home on the Eagle transport having been invalided from HMS Scipio, the report of Lieutenant Hibbs, Agent for the Transports, on the Peggy victualling tranport, which suffered a leak too bad to get the ship to port, resulting in the crew being removed and the ship burnt.

Folio 30: enclosure in folios 28-30. Order dated 22 July 1797, from James Bishop, HMS Janus, Senior Officer of HM Ships appointed to convoy the trade from Jamaica to Great Britain, to Captain John Cooke, to protect the rear of the convoy to Cape Clear and then to accompany the trade to Bristol and Liverpool before going to Spithead and if necessary to use the private signals used by ships from the Leeward Islands including vessels encountered in the English and Irish Channels.

Folios 31- 34: enclosure in folios 28-30. Copy of Order, dated 15 July 1797, from Sir Hyde Parker, Vice-Admiral of the Red and Commander in Chief of HM Ships and Vessels employed at and about Jamica, HMS Adventure, Cape Nichola Mole, to Captain James Bishop to convoy HMS Quebec and the trade assembling at Port Antonio, Jamaica through the Windward passage to Cape Clear, Ireland and from there for Captain Cooke to accompany the trade bound for Bristol and Liverpool and for him to accompany the remaining ships to the Downes and in the event of meeting cruisers to make use of the private signals used by ships coming from the Leeward Islands
