Description

Folio 18: Sir Richard Bickerton, HMS Ramillies, St Helens. Is sending a letter from Lieutenant Bell of the Marines who he considers is capable of performing the duties of a Lieutenant having 12 years Naval service and left to seek promotion.

Folios 19-21: enclosure in folio 18. Letter dated 16 May 1797, HMS Ramilies, St. Helens from Lieutenant H Bell, 1st Lieutenant Marines to Evan Nepean. Following Lieutenant Simmonds departure he asks to be considered for the vacancy. He passed in 1787 and as he had no patronage left the Service when Mr W M Pitt's interest procured him a commission in the Marines. He has been on board for 2 years and does not wish to leave Captain Bickerton's service. He has offered his service to Lord Bridport who advises he must apply to their Lordships.
