Folio 215: Robert Barlow, HMS Phoebe, Falmouth. Reports the arrival of HMS Phoebe and HMS Melampus. HMS Melampus joined him this morning having seen HMS Janus and her convoy safely into the Downs and having captured a French privateer. Captain Moore has given further details.
Folios 216-217: enclosure with folio 215. Letter dated 6 October 1797 from Graham Moore, HMS Melampus, Carrick Road, Falmouth, to Evan Nepean. Yesterday at 4 am he captured a Le Rayon, French lugger privateer, with 6 carriage guns, 8 cohorns and 54 men, commanded by Jean Baptiste Leonard Gosselin. She sailed from Cherbourg 10 hours before on a 6 week cruise between the Lizard and Cape Clear. She is well appointed and sails remarkably well.
