Description

Folios 161-162: S. J. Ballard [Samuel James Ballard], HMS Pearl, Spithead. Yesterday he sailed from Jersey, following orders from Captain D'Auvergne, Prince of Bouilllon, arriving this morning. Sir Richard Strachan's order dated off Marcon 4 September 1797 allowed him to proceed to England within 14 days. Is sending a report of the ship's defects and reports further problems with cables and sails. The main sail gave way in a gale between Guernsey and the 7 Islands. More men are sick as the lower deck is full of water.

Folio 162: enclosure in folios 161-162. Undated report from James Simons, Carpenter, of the defects of HMS Pearl, Samuel James Ballard Captain.

Folio 163: enclosure in folios 161-162. Letter dated 18 September 1797 from Captain D'Auvergne, Prince of Bouillon, HMS Bravo off Jersey, to Captain Ballard, HMS Pearl. Given the defects of the ship and the situation of the enemy in the vicinity, recommends him to repair the defects and supply the wants of the ship. Mentions Sir Richard Strachan's order. Asks him to take a packet of dispatches on board to be sent from the first Post Office he reaches as soon as he arrives in England.
