Description

Folios 157-161: S. J. Ballard [Samuel James Ballard], HMS Pearl, Isle St Marcon. Lieutenant Price has secret letters to send to England so he is taking the opportunity of HMS Fly to inform the Admiralty that on 14 July he received orders from Captain Gosselin to cruise of [Le] Havre and observe the enemy. The previous day he had seen 20 gun vessels rumoured to be planning an attack on the islands of St Marcon. He sent his 1st Lieutenant on shore with a flag of truce to the Principal Officer of the Marine, with the letter respecting the French fishermen. Is sending the Commissary's reply and Lieutenant Mitchell's observations on the enemy's force in the port of [Le] Havre.

Folio 158: enclosure with folios 157-161. Letter dated 14 July 1797 from Lieutenant John Mitchell , HMS Pearl, off [Le] Havre to Captain Ballard, HMS Pearl. Reports 2 large frigates in the basin, and 3 large corvettes. Two of the ships are called the Serpent and the Vulcan. Describes the number of guns they are capable of carrying, and makes observations about their readiness for sea. Inside the pier head there are 16 to 20 gun vessels, some of which he observed closely enough to be able to describe.

Folios 159-161: enclosure with folios 157-161. Letter (in French) dated 14 July 17907 from Le Roy, Commissaire Principal de Marine. [Translated summary: Receipt of letter from Monsieur Michel, 1st Lieutenant, with the Admiralty orders. which will be forwarded the Minister of the Marine. The fishermen will be advised to conform to the contents of the letter.]
