Folios 152-154: S. J. Ballard [Samuel James Ballard], HMS Pearl, Spithead. Receipt of orders to fit for foreign service. When the ship was docked at Sheerness in the winter some of her timbers were rotten. As reported by captain Trollope she has since been ashore on the stone bank of Gravelins and on her last cruise performed badly in a gale. If he is to cross the Atlantic he hopes it will be in company with a warship as the seamen have long had it in their heads that the ship is rotten.
