Folios 148-150: S. J. Ballard [Samuel James Ballard], HMS Pearl, Spithead. Since his letter of 28 March reporting his sailing from Torbay with the Newfoundland trade he gave convoy instructions to 3 more vessels, making a total of 16. and is sending a list. The Industry brig parted company on the 6th and the other 15 left with him on the 9th. he met an enemy frigate and chased her for 37 hours when he fell in with Admiral Waldegrave in HMS Flora. On the 15th he had orders to place himself under the Admiral's command. He learns from the commander of L'Incroyable, a privateer from Bordeaux with 20 guns and 220 men that several large privateers from Bordeaux and Nantes are at sea and have stores for 3 months. Gives their proposed positions.
