Description

Folios 206-207: [Honourable] Courtenay Boyle, HMS Kangaroo, Yarmouth. States o narriving in the River Elbe on 8 February 1796, he reported on the intelligence he sent to you for the Admiralty as per my order from Vice Admiral Charles Buckner at the Nore and 3 days after receiving orders from Captain Richard Lane, HMS Astraea then lying at Gluckstade [Glückstadt], copies of which he enclose. He took the earliest opportunity of proceeding from there and as per order of Captain Richard Lane cruised off Texel wherehe collected the information that the Dutch Fleet is in the same situation he reported in my last letter. Reports on the damage to HMS Kangaroo and the ill health of the crew. Awaits further orders.

Folio 208: enclosure in folios 206-207. Letter dated 16 January 1796 by Richard Lane, HMS Astraea, Gluckstade [Glückstadt] to the Honourable Courtenay Boyle. Reply to letter dated 13 January 1796, the same evening Captain Popham acquainted him of you having written when you arrived in the Elbe with HMS Kangaroo, enclosing me Vice Admiral Buckner's order to ascertain information on the Dutch Fleet. You are therefor ordered to Texel and to remain until further orders or the Dutch Fleet leaves the port, or any part of them superior to our force in the Elbe, HMS Astraea, HMS Aurora and HMS Vestal, in which case you will return.

Folio 209: enclosure in folios 206-207. Letter dated 16 January 1796 by Richard Lane, HMS Astraea, Gluckstade [Glückstadt] to the Honourable Courtenay Boyle. Reply to letter dated 9 February 1796, after my letter was closed, I have opened them to add that from the intelligence you have now transmitted it becomes more necessary that you should proceed to put in execution the order I have enclosed:- I shall transmit to the Admiralty the results of your intelligence and the order I have given you.
