Description

Folios 292-293: Thomas Bertie [aka Thomas Hoare], Marlborough Buildings, Bath. He has leave from Rear Admiral Parker[William Parker] to return to England for his health to be surveyed, and is staying with some of his family. With the Admiralty's permission he intends to stay here until he recovers. He left HMS Hindostan on 5 August 1796. at Port-au-Prince, [Haiti], and asks that another captain be appointed to command her. From his ship he went to the Cape St Nicholas on August 7 and then took passage in an American vessel on 11 August, arriving at Falmouth on 29 September, 1796. He encloses a copy of the orders for him to leave HMS Hindostan. PS By order of Commodore Duckworth [John Thomas Duckworth], he left Lieutenant Perkins [John Perkins] of the schooner HMS Marie Antoinette in temporary command of HMS Hindostan to await the arrival at Port-au-Prince of Commander Collingwood [Francis Collingwood] in HMS Cormorant.

Folio 293: enclosure in folios 292-293. Letter dated 22 July 1796 by Rear Admiral William Parker, HMS Swiftsure, Cape St Nicholas Mole, to Captain Thomas Bertie, HMS Hindostan. Acknowledges Captain Bertie's letter of resignation because of his health, he has appointed Commander Collingwood [Francis Collingwood] of HMS Cormorant to act as captain of HMS Hindostan in his absence. He gives Captain Bertie leave to return to England, but he must first come to the Mole to be examined to establish whether a change of climate is absolutely necessary. At it may be some time before HMS Cormorant arrives, Captain Bertie has permission to put the First Lieutenant in charge of his vessel until Commander Collingwood arrives.

Folios 294-295: enclosure in folios 292-293. Letter dated 22 July 1796 by William Goddard. Copy of orders from Rear Admiral William, Parker, Commander in Chief at Jamaica, HMS Swiftsure at Cape St Nicholas Mole, to William Farhir, Surgeon of HM Naval Hospital, and the Surgeons of HMS Dictator and HMS Jamaica to examine Captain Thomas Bertie of HMS Hindostan when he arrives and determine whether the state of his health makes it necessary for him to return to England. 7 August 1796. William Farhir, Surgeon of HM Naval Hospital, Stephen Loverick, Surgeon of HMS Dictator, and B Harris, Surgeon of HMS Jamaica, HM Naval Hospital Cape St Nicholas [Jamaica]. As ordered by Rear Admiral William Parker they have examined Captain Thomas Bertie of HMS Hindostan and find he is afflicted with a nervous affectation of the left side, and are unanimous that he must return to England to recover his health.

Folio 295: enclosure in folios 292-293. Letter dated 8 August, 1796 by Captain Thomas Totty, HMS Dictator, Cape St Nicholas Mole, to Captain Thomas Bertie, HMS Hindostan. Rear Admiral William Parker has directed William Farhir, Surgeon of the naval hospital at Cape St Nicholas , and the Surgeons of HMS Dictator and HMS Jamaica to examine Captain Bertie's health and the three surgeons have found that he is afflicted with a nervous affection and must return to England. Admiral Parker has given Captain Bertie permission to return. He now, as directed by Commodore John Thomas Duckworth, gives Captain Bertie orders to leave Cape St Nicholas and return to England by the first opportunity and report his arrival to the Admiralty.
