Description

Folio 239: William Bedford, HMS Royal Sovereign, Spithead. James Sheppard (2) deserted the ship on 30 October 1796, and passed through the barrier at Portsea without being examined. Thomas Roper left the ship yesterday and was able to walk up the London Road dressed as a sailor and pass through the same barried unchecked. Captain Bedford followed Roper but the deserter hid himself in a fish cart on the road to Chichester. The stories of both men show how easy it is for seamen to escape from Portsmouth or Gosport.

Folio 240: enclosure in folio 239: William Bedford, HMS Royal Sovereign, Spithead. Gives detailed descriptions of deserters James Sheppard, a native of Acton, and Thomas Roper, born at Worcester but now living at Edmonton. He believes the two men plan to meet at Acton.
