Folio 233: William Bedford, HMS Queen, Spithead. Encloses [no longer present] a list of the names and descriptions of men who have deserted since the ship came into port. He has traced several of them to the road to London, asks that the Marshal of the Admiralty be asked to apprehend them. Several of his seamen whom he gave leave to visit the Chest at Chatham report they were not asked for their tickets of leave either going or returning. Of the deserters, David Duncan, Corneliuis McAllen and John Craig were seen near Guildford yesterday by an officer from HMS Queen. He thinks the ease with which seamen can escape from Portsmouth or Gosport encourages desertion.
