Folios 344-345: Albemarle Bertie, HMS Thunderer, Spithead. Responding to the letter of 2 December. Observes that he was uncomfortable being asked to name any particular sum, but following instructions and with advice from his fellow officers he came upon what he thought was the best way to answer the question. He respects the decision and will accept what he is offered, but notes that it is impossible that his expenses for the French Officers could be less than he stated. He is distressed that it could be thought that he had claimed more than he had paid out. He feels duty bound to put this in writing, as othgerwise he would be accepting that his original claim was overstated.
