Folios 337-338: Albemarle Bertie, HMS Thunderer, Quiberon Bay. As ordered by Sir John Warren, he sent home HMS Leda and HMS Lively with the regiments of D'Hector, D'Hervilly and Du Dresnay, and the Leighton Hospital Ship and empty transport vessels. Sir John left him with instructions to land a quantity of stores when he found an opportunity and General George could receive them, but he does not think it possible because of enemy numbers. The last account from the Chouans was that there were 7,800 men, and more troops arriving daily. They heard a heavy bombardment the previous day and preceding night, which they assume to be an engagement involving Commodore Sir John Warren and General Doyle. The winds have been light and guns can be heard at a great distance. He has received the dispatches sent with HMS Spider, and has forwarded them to the Commodore with HMS Spider. HMS Incendiary, said to have sailed with her, has not yet arrived. Gives warning that water and food supplies will last only 14-16 days; he does not know how long their operations are intended.
Folios 338-339: enclosure with folios 338-339. Albemarle Bertie, (copy) extract from a letter received from Captain Robinson of HMS Arethusa, Belle Isle Road, 26 September. Yesterday he intercepted one of the Belle Isle fishing boats, carrying 5 fishermen with their pots and a very great quantity of fish. He has reason to believe that the fishing boats of Belle Isle each catch, daily, sufficient fish to feed (with bread) 500 men. It is obvious that the blockade of Belle Isle is very inefficient: he sees 50 to 70 such boats fish daily completely unmolested. One or two gun boats with an equal number of armed Chasses Maries could efficiently block the fishing vessels. The Chasses Marie which he was informed by the Commander-in-Chief would be under his command has not yet arrived.
