Description

Folio 327: Albemarle Bertie, Portsmouth. Had written to Lord Spencer to request an Acting Captain is appointed to HMS Thunderer, as the San Jago Cause is coming on the 10th January, which requires his presence. Yesterday received a note from Lieutenant A Hammond saying Lord Spencer has reconsidered his application, because of the importance of the stake. As seen in Scott' s letter, he is anxious for Captain Bertie to come up. If permission is granted, it must be by return of post. He has asked for the meeting to be postponed until Wednesday to give him time to arrive.

Folios 328-329: enclosure with folio 327. Note dated 2 January 1795 by William Scott. A short note in answer to the letter [from Captain Bertie] to say that a meeting next Tuesday would suit, if convenient. If not, Wednesday at the latest. His opinion is aagainst asking for more time, but may be influenced by what happens at their meeting. He does not expect further papers before 10 January, but he relies on there being none that will be detrimental to them. Hopes to communicate more fully in a few days.
