Description

Folio 321-322: Velters Cornewall Berkeley, HMS Emerald, the Nore. Responds to the letter of 10 December which enclosed the affidavit of William Clarke, Master of the Snow Sparrow employed on the Southern Whale Fishery, and the muster list of that vessel. He was asked to report on the circumstances regarding the pressing of five men: Francis Smith, Joseph Orton, John Bunn, John Haley and Christopher Wield. They were pressed on 6 December by Lieutenant Bedford. It appears that Francis Smith is Carpenter and Harpooner of the Snow Sparrow and therefore should not hahve been pressed. It appears that the others were correctly pressed as they had no protection individually or in general, nor do they appear upon any muster list. Very much hopes that they will not be discharged as their circumstances are very different from those of Francis Smith.
