Folio 382: Jahleel Brenton, Regulating Captain, Greenock. Encloses [not present] his weekly return of men raised and a protection for John Carter belonging to HMS Leviathan, Greenland ship impressed by the Peggy tender's boat from a boarding vessel in the Clyde. As he is informed that protections are frequently used to keep seamen from the service, he thought it proper to detain the man until receives directions. HMS Dapne and HMS Martin are moored at the eastern end of the town. The rendevous boats are constantly employed on the river but the homeward bound ships land all their men at the mouth of the Clyde. Captains Thomas Sotheby and Richard Lane inform him they are in need of stores and provisions.
