Folios 43-44. Viscount Lonsdale to [Newcastle]. Weak constitution due to illnesses; cold and fatigue prevent him going to Westmorland. Praises gentlemen who defended Carlisle [Cumberland]. Rebels [Jacobites] marching south; Marshal Wade at least two days behind. Dated at Byram [Yorkshire]. Enclosures:
1. Folio 45. Copy. Mr Cowper to Postmaster of Brough [?Westmorland]. 'Highland Army' marching towards Lancaster [Lancashire]. Several rebel leaders named: Lord George Murray; Lord Elcho; Lord Nairne; Glenbucket; Duke of Perth. 'Prince' [Charles Edward Stuart] expected soon at T Simpson's house. Rebels demanding public money. Rebels being counted at Eamont Bridge [Cumberland/Westmorland border].
2. Folio 46. Copy. Mr Cowper to Postmaster of Brough. 'Highlanders' [Jacobites] arriving in Penrith [Cumberland], demanding post office's accounts. Marshal Wade at Hexham [Northumberland], advance guard at Hayton Bridge [?Haydon Bridge, Northumberland]. 'Chevalier's' [Charles Edward Stuart] Vanguard gone to Lord Lonsdale's, on route to Lancaster. Dated at Penrith, 20 November 1745.
