Folios 69-70. Sir Conyers D'Arcy to [Newcastle]. Intelligence from Marshal Wade; rebels [Jacobites] took Carlisle Castle [Cumberland] on 15 November before he could relieve it. Rebels marching through Penrith [Cumberland] to Appleby [Westmorland]. North riding companies only have 500 untrained men; not enough to obstruct rebels. Will retreat to York [Yorkshire] and join Lord Malton. Deputy lieutenants and Justices of the Peace meeting daily. Dated at Aske [Yorkshire].
