Folios 46-47. Marshal George Wade to Newcastle. News of Carlisle's [Cumberland] surrender; Colonel Durand has details. If town held out, rebels [Jacobites] would have been dealt 'a decisive blow'. Rebel army marching to Penrith [Cumberland], towards Lancashire. Wade will return to Newcastle [Northumberland], then march to Boroughbridge [Yorkshire]. Many soldiers sick due to bad weather and poor roads. Spies providing intelligence about rebel movements. Dated at Hexham [Northumberland]. Enclosure:
1. Folios 48-49. Proceedings of Council of War at Hexham. Present: Marshal Wade; Comte de Nassau; Lieutenant General Schwartzenberg; Lieutenant General Lord Tyrawley; Lieutenant General Thomas Wentworth. Carlisle capitulated on 15 November without consent of Colonel Durand, garrison commandant. Army to return to Newcastle due to severe weather, lack of supplies, insufficient forces and artillery, difficult terrain and sick soldiers. Reports of rebels in Penrith on 18 November. Dated at Hexham.
