Description

Folios 24-26. Earl Poulett to Newcastle. Response given to local gentlemen at public meeting at Bridgwater [Somerset], who have concerns about cost of 'subscription' or 'association' against rebels [Jacobites]. Criticises Whigs for not attending meeting, including: Mr Speke of Wells; Dean of Wells; Mr Piers; Medlicot; James Smyth; Hayward of Taunton; old Dodington; Balch; Mr How. Lord Ilchester too ill to attend. Local excise man jailed for supporting Pretender [?Charles Edward Stuart]. Recommends James Perry of Wellington to Newcastle. Dated at Hinton [?Hinton St George, Somerset]. Enclosure:

1. Folios 27-28. Declaration from inhabitants of Chard [Somerset], against 'wicked and unnatural Rebellion' and 'Popish Pretender' [Charles Edward Stuart].
