Preston and Wyre Railway and Harbour Company was incorporated under act of 3rd July 1835, and by act of 5th May 1837, Preston and Wyre Dock Company was incorporated. By virtue of act of 1st July 1839, above two companies were consolidated into one company by name Preston and Wyre Railway Harbour and Dock Company.

Under Section 34 of Manchester and Leeds Railway Act of 3rd August 1846, power was given for consolidated company to be amalgamated with Manchester and Leeds Railway Company. Name of latter was changed, under Manchester and Leeds Railway Act No.3 of 9th July 1847, to Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. However, under Acts 12 and 13 Vic, cap.74, 28th July 1849, Preston and Wyre Railway Harbour and Dock Company was vested in London and North Western Railway Company and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company jointly, powers of Preston and Wyre Railway Harbour and Dock Company to be exercised by Committee of Management in accordance with Section 18 of this 1849 Act.

Preston and Wyre Railway Harbour and Dock Company was dissolved, as from 1st July 1888, under London and North Western Railway Act of 7th August 1888 (Section 60), and shareholders were to receive stocks of London and North Western Railway and Lancashire and Yorkshire railway companies in proportions set forth in Section 62 of this Act.

Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company was amalgamated with London and North Western Railway Company, as from 1st January 1922, under Amalgamation Scheme dated 20th December 1921, and London and North Western Railway Company became vested in London Midland and Scottish Railway Company, as from 1st January 1923, under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme dated 30th December 1922.
