Folios 261-262: Matthew Flinders, 7 Mary Street, Fitzroy Square.
Refers to an enclosed account of the experiments made to ascertain the effects produced on the compass by the magnetic attractions in ships with his decductions therefrom and the ways by which he believes the errors may best be obviated. He recommends immediate correction in the construction and treatment of compasses in the Navy and outlines a plan to accomplish that end.
Folios 263-264: enclosure with folios 261-262. Initialled JH[Hurd?], Hydrographical Office 29 July 1812 recommends referring the Papers from Matthew Flinders to Sir Joseph Banks.
Folios 265-266: enclosure with folios 261-262. Matthew Flinders, 7 Mary Street, Fitzroy Square 26 August 1812 writes that the differences reported are not the same in all ships. He recommends sending the statement to Sir Home Popham, Peter Heywood of HMS Nereus and King of the Cossacks. Officers in HMS Bedford, HMS Belle Poule and HMS Starling are interested.
