Description

Folios 235-236: Matthew Flinders, 9 Mary Street, Fitzroy Square.

Reports his return from having attended the experiments in Portsmouth on board HMS Loire and HMS Devastation and refers to the enclosed report. Some circumstances relating principally to the quantity and distribution of iron in the ships are not mentioned in the report by the captains of the two ships and Flinders encloses a separate report. He offers to draw up a connected report of all the experiments, make deductions as to what might be useful practically and point out what appear to be the causes. He will also make suggestions for the construction and care of compasses. He adds an account of his expenses incurred.

Folios 237-238: enclosure with folios 235-236. Initialled J H[urd?], Hydrographical Office, 8 June 1812 stating that Flinders should be authorised to connect the reports of the experiments made at different sea ports so that some practical good may be derived from them.

Folios 239-240: enclosure with folios 235-236. Additional observations on board HMS Loire given in great detail.

Folios 241-242: enclosure with folios 235-2236. Matthew Flinders, 1 June 1812. Additional observations on board HMS Devastation given in great detail.
