Folios 261-262: John Filmore, HMS Crocodile, Spithead. Encloses the report of the Officers of HMS Crocodile on the experimental sails which were tested on the coast of Africa off Senegal between 3 February 1810 and 14 July 1811 to see how the different sails of canvases prepared Mr Browell and Mr Best succeeded in preventing mildew with unprepared canvasses. Explains that the death of Commodore [Edward Henry] Columbine meant that reporting the details of the sails had been devolved to him but that he had had no communication or instructions from Commodore Columbine so the report may not be as detailed as the Admiralty were expecting. Concludes with his conviction of the superiority of Mr Browell's canvas to that of Mr Best's as well as to the sails commonly used in the Navy.
Folios 263-264: enclosure with folios 261-262. Report, dated 25 June 1811, of the Officers of HMS Crocodile, at sea, on the experimental sails, signed by John Filmore Acting Captain, John Fusie Lieutenant, R Dodd Master and Richard Giles Boatswain.
