Folios 514-515: Matthew Flinders, London. Reports that on examining into the state of his papers after the shipwreck of HMS Porpoise, in which he was returning to England in 1803 as a passenger, several were found to have been lost and many others much shattered. The whole saved were taken from him by General De Caen, Governor of the Isle of France and when they were returned some years afterwards, rats had got into the trunk and made nests of some of them. He sent the whole from the Isle de France in the state they were in, and now find some of the papers necessary to the proving his accounts, as Commander and Purser of HMS Investigator are wanting.
