Description

Folios 113-114: Robert Louis Fitzgerald, the Sea Fencibles, Haverfordwest. Asks that the enclosed letter be laid before the Lords of the Admiralty. If there is a vacancy in the district, asks for Lieutenant Rice Morgan be appointed, as his health will not allow him to serve at sea. During the time that Lieutenant Morgan was at the signal station at St Anne's he conducted himself well.

Folios 115-116: enclosed with folios 113-114. Letter dated 1 January 1807 from Lieutenant Rice Morgan, Broomhill near Dale, to Captain Robert Louis Fitzgerald. Reminds Captain Fitzgerald that he served under his command at St Anne's Signal Station. As he understands there is now a vacancy for a Lieutenant in the Sea Fencibles in this district, hopes to be appointed to it with Captain Fitzgerald's approval. He was appointed First Lieutenant of HMS Druid in June 1805 under Captain Philip Bowes Vere Broke, but because of poor health had to be invalided at Cork five months later. When he asked for a shore appointment, he was put in command of the St John's Point Signal Station in County Donegal and remained there until November 1806, when again poor health and the fact that the nearest medical aid was 40 miles away forced him to ask to be replaced. Since then he has been rebuilding his health, hopes for another opportunity to serve his country.
