Description

Folios 216-217: Francis Fayerman, HMS Athenian, St Helens. John Whalen and Thomas Marshal, apprentices, seem to have run away from their Master, Mr Oldknow, to Liverpool and were taken up by the press gang there. They were put on board the tender and received from HMS Puissant with other boys. Neither of them appears to have been at sea.

Folios 218-220: enclosure with folios 216-217. Letter dated 12 May 1805 from Samuel Oluknow, Millor, near Stockport, to Captain Fayerman, HMS Athenian. John Waylen and Thomas Marshall now on board HMS Athenian are his apprentices as per the enclosed indenture [not now attached].If it is necessary to have them presented to the Admiralty Board as he was told it would be when he applied for the lads at Liverpool, he asks for the indentures to be forwarded. Asks for the lads to be given a note that he sent John Much to Liverpool for them twice and he could not obtain their freedom. He sent them a letter wishing them to be happy and if they met the french to do their best to beat them.

Folios 220-221: enclosure with folios 216-217. Letter dated 30 May 1804 from Francis Fayerman, HMS Athenian, St Helens, to William Marsden, Secretary, Admiralty Office, London. He is sending him the enclosed letter and indentures and asks for directions.
