Folios 171-172: Solomon Ferris, HMS Hercule, Portsmouth Harbour. Reply to your directions to state how Malachi Morris has conducted himself as Schoolmaster under his command. Observes that when he applied to me, he produced two or three very good certificates which he much fears he never really deserved, he cannot recommend him as a fit person to be Schoolmaster of a ship and would be glad of an Order either to discharge him from the Service or into any other Ship.
