Administrative / biographical background

Springfields, near Preston, has provided nuclear fuel fabrication services since the mid-1940s and was the first plant in the world to produce fuel for a commercial power station. The site is run and operated by Springfields Fuels Limited, under the management of Westinghouse Electric UK Limited. In April 2005, responsibility for the assets and liabilities of Springfields transferred to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
