Description

Prisoner name: George Lilley.

Court and date of trial: Norfolk Lent Assizes at Thetford March 1831.

Crime: Burglary at the house of Mr J W Coke, MP.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: 'This is a bad case. The man is going abroad. It is against the rule to allow the [wife] to go with the convict husband. No instance in which this has been done. The utmost done is, under special circumstances, when the man has been transported and it has been satisfactorily ascertained that he would be able to support his wife, to send over his wife to him, the friends buying a passge.'

Petitioner(s): Prisoner undersigned by 26 people (names and addresses given); Mary Ann Lilley (prisoner's wife); Frederick Lilley (or Frederick Finley), the convict's father.

Grounds for clemency: Very respectable family many of whom employed by the Royal Household; previous good conduct; wife so broken hearted has requested permission to be transported with him; only been married three weeks when husband committed crime; duped into crime by someone else but will not name him.

Other papers: Copy of character reference from Marquis of Bristol. Copy of character reference from Lord Ellenborough. Character reference from James Aspinnall for Mary Ann Lilley (prisoner's wife). Letter from [Mr Berringham] in support of Mary Ann Lilley's request to be allowed to accompany her husband when transported.

Additional information: The convict was held in Norwich Castle.
