Incorporated in 1845 under Act 8 & 9 Vic, cap.41 by an amalgamation of the Yarmouth & Norwich Railway Company, which had been incorporated on 18th June 1842 under Act 5 & 6 Vic, cap.82, and the Norwich & Brandon Railway Company, which had been incorporated in 1844 under Act 7 & 8 Vic, cap.15.

Under act of 7th August 1862 the Norfolk Railway Company was amalgamated with the East Anglian; Eastern Counties; Eastern Union; and East Suffolk railway companies, with their subsidiary undertakings, to form the Great Eastern Railway Company.

The Great Eastern Railway Company became part of the London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under the North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
