Incorporated under the Great Eastern Railway Company and Midland and Great Northern Railway Joint Committee Act 25th July 1898, the committee consisting of four members nominated by the directors of the Great Eastern Railway Company and two each representing the Midland and Great Northern railway companies.

As from 1st January 1923 the Great Eastern and the Great Northern railway companies were vested in the London & North Eastern Railway Company under the North Eastern, Eastern & East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922, and the Midland Railway Company was vested in the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company under the North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.

The Norfolk & Suffolk Joint Railways Committee was vested in the British Transport Commission as from 1st January 1948 under the Transport Act 1947.
