Incorporated as the Newmarket & Chesterford Railway Company by act of 16th July 1846 (9 & 10 Vic, cap.172). By company's act of 1847 (cap.20, section XXI), its name was changed to Newmarket Railway.

Newmarket Railway Company was amalgamated, with other railway companies, to form the Great Eastern Railway Company by act of 7th August 1862 (25 & 26 Vic, cap.223). The Great Eastern Railway Company was vested in the London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
