Originally known as the Newton and Moretonhampstead Railway Company and then subsequently known as the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway Company. Incorporated under their act of 7th July 1862 and amalgamated with South Devon Railway Company as from 1st July 1872 by South Devon Railway Act 18th July 1872. South Devon Railway Company amalgamated with Great Western Railway Company as from 1st August 1878 by Great Western and South Devon railway companies' Amalgamation Act 22nd July 1878.
