An amalgamation of the Swindon Marlborough & Andover Railway Company and the Swindon & Cheltenham Extension Railway Company under the Swindon Marlborough & Andover and Swindon & Cheltenham Extension railway companies' (Amalgamation) Act of 23rd June 1884.

This company was absorbed into the Great Western Railway Company as from 1st July 1923 under the Great Western Railway (Midland & South Western Junction Railway) Absorption Scheme dated 28th September 1923.
