Incorporated by Act passed 13th May 1791 (3 Geo III, cap.68),"at Parliament begun and holder at Westminster 25th November 1790", as"Company of Proprietors of Canal Navigation from Manchester to Bolton and to Bury". By act of 23rd August 1831, new company was incorporated under name of Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal Navigation and Railway Company.
By Manchester and Leeds Act of 18th August 1846, company was amalgamated with Manchester and Leeds Railway. By virtue of Manchester and Leeds Railway Act No. 3, 9th July 1847, name of Company was changed to Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company which company was amalgamated with London and North Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1922, latter becoming amalgamated into London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 by virtue of Railways Act dated 19th August 1921.
