Administrative / biographical background

Incorporated by act of 22nd July 1847. Under Section 76 of this Act, after certain conditions there outlined had been fulfilled, Manchester and Southport Railway Company was to be united to and incorporated with Manchester and Leeds Railway Company. Under East Lancashire and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways' Act of 3rd July 1854, it is recited that Manchester and Southport Railway "is now or will shortly become property of Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company" and that East Lancashire Railway Company "will become joint owners with Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company of certain portions of Manchester and Southport Railway" (See also 391 of Railway Times of 1855). H.G. Lewin in his book "Railway Mania and its Aftermath" (1936) states that amalgamation of Manchester and Southport Railway with Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company took place in 1855.

Under Lancashire and Yorkshire and East Lancashire Railways Amalgamation Act 13th August 1859, East Lancashire Railway Company was dissolved and vested in Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company was amalgamated with London and North Western Railway Company under latter title as from 1st January 1922, under London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire railway companies' Amalgamation Scheme 1921 dated 20th December 1921; and London and North Western Railway Company was amalgamated into London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North

Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
