Administrative / biographical background

Incorporated as the East Kent Railway Company under Act of 4 August 1853. The name was altered to London, Chatham and Dover Railway Company under Act of 1 August 1859.

Under the South Eastern and London Chatham and Dover Railway Companies' Act of 1 August 1899 the South Eastern and the London Chatham and Dover railway companies were authorised to be used, worked, managed, maintained and improved as one undertaking and a Management Committee was incorporated for the purpose under the name of 'The South Eastern and Chatham railway companies' Managing Committee'.

By virtue of the Railways (Southern Group) Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 22 December 1922 the South Eastern and the London Chatham and Dover railway companies together with the South Eastern and Chatham railway companies' Managing Committee, and the London and South Western and London Brighton and South Coast railway companies were amalgamated to form the Southern Railway Company.
