In 1972-2003 British Railways Board
Incorporated under act of 5th May 1837. By act of 3rd April 1843 power was given to lease company to Company of Proprietors of Lancaster Canal Navigation, but this was not executed; Act of 1st August 1849 recited that Lancaster Canal Navigation had been in actual possession of Lancaster & Preston Junction Railway Company as from 1st September 1842 under agreement, and that dispute existed as to rights of canal company to have lease under said Agreement. This Act of 1849 then provided for management and control of Lancaster & Preston Junction Railway Company to be relinquished by that Company and transferred to Lancaster & Carlisle Railway Company.
Under Lancaster & Carlisle Railway Act of 13th August 1859, provision was made for amalgamation of Kendal & Windermere Railway Company and Lancaster & Preston Junction Railway Company with Lancaster & Carlisle Railway Company and for London & North Western Railway Company to appoint Directors (see Section 49).
Under London & North Western Railway (Additional Powers) Act 21st July 1879 (Section 40), Lancaster & Carlisle Railway Company was dissolved and its powers transferred to and vested in London & North Western Railway Company. London & North Western Railway Company was vested in London Midland & Scottish Railway Company under North Western, Midland & West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
