The British Council's present administrative structure reflects a former division into regional and functional departments which is no longer formally maintained. Overseas representation, under the overall supervision of the director general, is the work of three divisions which are defined geographically. An Educational Contracts Department provides paid educational services to foreign governments and other organisations overseas. The Home Division deals with the council's operations in Great Britain, including services to students and other visitors from abroad. The other functional divisions of the council deal respectively with the arts, books, education and science, and English language teaching.
Each division is headed by a controller, with directors for particular functions or areas. The divisions are responsible either to the deputy director general or to one of two assistant directors generals. There are in addition a medical and a law department, under a medical director and a legal adviser respectively, each answerable to an assistant director general.
