Incorporated under act of 17th July 1862. Under Section 51 of London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (Additional Powers) Act 29th July 1864, Horsham, Dorking & Leatherhead Railway Company was to be amalgamated with London Brighton & South Coast Railway Company as from "time of amalgamation", "time of amalgamation" being date of completion of railway, defined in agreement dated 12th February 1863 in Schedule B to Act, as date of certificate in writing of Engineer for time being of Brighton Company that "line and works as far as thereby agreed to be done by Horsham Company are completed in every respect to his satisfaction."
There was evidently some controversy as to date of amalgamation, counsel's opinion being sought thereon, but certificate of Engineer was dated 1st May 1867. (See London, Brighton and South Coast Railway minutes, Vol 74, p. 641 for 21 May 1867)
The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Company became part of Southern Railway as from 1st January 1923 under Railways (Southern Group) Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 22nd December 1922.
