The Halifax and Ovenden Junction Railway was incorporated by act of 27 and 28 Vic, cap.143 (30 June 1864). Subscribers were the Great Northern, and Lancashire & Yorkshire Railways. By 30 and 31 Vic, cap.178 (12 August 1867) the company was authorised to make variations to line and to increase capital. By 33 and 34 Vic, cap.141 (1 August 1870) the time for completing works was extended to 1 July 1873, and by the same act the company was vested in Great Northern, and Lancashire & Yorkshire railway companies, with a joint committee of four members from each company. Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway was amalgamated with London & North Western Railway company from 1 January 1922, under the Amalgamation Scheme dated 20 December 1921.

London and North Western Railway became vested in London Midland & Scottish Railway Company from 1 January 1923 under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme of 30 December 1922. Great Northern Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1 January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme dated 20 December 1922. Undertaking was transferred to British Transport Commission by cap.49 of Transport Act, 1947.
