The Great North of England Clarence and Hartlepool Junction Railway Company was incorporated under act of 1837 (7 Wm IV and 1 Vic, cap.95).
Under an act of 1845 line was leased to Hartlepool Dock and Railway Company and this latter company was leased to York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company for 31 years from 1st July 1848 under agreement dated 18th December 1848 in pursuance of powers conferred by act of 1848 (11 and 12 Vic, cap.81).
