Administrative / biographical background

. After the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company had changed its name to the Great Central Railway (GCR) in 1897, the names of joint committees also need to be changed. In the case of the various committees held between the GCR and the London and North Western Railway Company (LNWR), the opportunity was taken to unify them all into one committee. The Great Central and London and North Western Railways Joint Committee was the consequence, the formation of which was authorised by the Great Central Railway Act 1905. The committee took over the responsibility of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway, the Oldham, Ashton under Lyne and Guide Bridge Junction Railway and the joint station committees of Manchester London Road and Stalybridge.

Although the GCR and LNWR were grouped, on 1st January 1923, into the London and North Eastern Railway and London, Midland and Scottish Railway respectively, the committee existed until 1st August 1924 when its responsibility was transferred to the London, Midland and Scottish and London and North Eastern Railways Comapnies Joint Committee.
