The Furness and Midland Railway Act 1863 empowered the Furness Railway Company and the Midland Railway Company to form the Furness and Midland Railways Joint Committee to construct a railway from a junction with the Furness Railway Company's Ulverstone and Lancaster Railway at Carnforth to join the London and North Western Railway at Wennington.
The railway was 9.5 miles long and was opened on 10th April 1867 being operated by the Midland Railway Company.
The committee existed until both companies were grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway on 1st January 1923.
